The UK legal minimum tyre tread depth is 1.6mm. Driving below this risks a £2,500 fine and 3 penalty points per tyre. Here's how to check yours in under a minute.
In the UK, the legal minimum tyre tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its entire circumference. Driving on tyres below this limit is illegal and carries serious penalties — plus it puts you and other road users at genuine risk.
What's the Fine for Illegal Tyre Tread?
Each illegal tyre carries a maximum fine of £2,500 and 3 penalty points. On a car with four illegal tyres, that's up to £10,000 and 12 points — enough for an immediate disqualification. Insurance can also be voided if you're involved in an accident on illegal tyres.
How to Check Tread Depth in 60 Seconds
Three methods to check your tread depth:
- Tread depth gauge (£3–£10 from any motor factors — most accurate)
- 20p coin test: insert a 20p into the tread groove; if the outer rim of the coin is visible, depth is below 2mm
- Tread wear indicators: moulded into tyre grooves at 1.6mm — if flush with tread surface, replace immediately
When Should You Actually Replace Tyres?
The legal limit of 1.6mm is the absolute minimum. Safety experts — including Michelin and TyreSafe — recommend replacing at 3mm. Wet-weather braking distances from 80mph increase by up to 44% between 3mm and 1.6mm. Waiting until the legal limit is waiting too long.
TyreSafe estimates that 17% of cars on UK roads have at least one illegal tyre. Don't be part of that statistic — check your tyres monthly and after any significant impact.
